Farmers market - a study in humanity

We have been selling at the farmers market for 3 months and every time I am struck by the different kinds of people that visit the market. They can however be classified into 3 categories according to me.

There are the early risers who, always come before the stalls are fully setup. These are not your loiterers who stroll around enjoying the artisan products that any farmers market has to offer. They are all business. They are here for their weekly supplies of vegetables and fruits. They walk in and out in 10 minutes flat. They are also your best customers if you can catch their eye and convert them. People in this category usually become your regulars.

Then come the second round of people. The occasional visitors. They come from around the neighborhood or are visiting from out town. They are there to take in the atmosphere. They saunter, chat with the vendors and soak in the California sun. They are the spenders. They will usually buy your goods and chatting with them always makes for a good conversation.

The last category are the bargain hunters. They come towards the end of the market looking for good deals since most vendors drop their prices towards the end of the market. These are regulars too but are the toughest category to sell to.

Selling at a farmers market makes for a very interesting experience ! It teaches you marketing strategy , the ability to stay agile and above all the ability to converse with people of all races, backgrounds and tastes!
